Choosing the Right Veterinarian

Dr. Oz isn't only interested in helping people maintain good health—he wants your furry friends at home to live long and healthy lives too. On his Oprah Radio show, Dr. Oz gets the answers to common health questions from three authorities on petcare.

Dr. Louise Murray, the director of medicine for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and author of Vet Confidential: An Insider's Guide to Protecting Your Pet, says there are a few things you need to know before you chose a veterinarian to care for your animal.

Instead of just flipping through the Yellow Pages, turn to friends for veterinarian recommendations, Dr. Murray says. Then, visit the veterinarian's office and ask if he has these two important pieces of medical equipment:

Blood pressure-measuring equipment: "Most pets in this country have never had their blood pressure measured, and it's just as important in pets as it is in people," she says.
Pulse oximeter: This is a piece of equipment that measures the oxygen level in your pet's blood stream. Dr. Murray says it's important for a number of reasons. "If your pet is under anesthesia, one of the most dangerous things that can happen is that their oxygen level can drop," she says. "If you don't have a pulse oximeter on that pet ... there is no way for the veterinarian or pet to know the pet is getting into trouble until that pet stops breathing."

If you find a veterinarian you click with and he has the proper equipment on hand, Dr. Murray says you should talk with him about your pet's needs and lifestyle. Then, she says it's important to make sure your pet has these vaccinations:

For cats:

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia (FVRCP) is the main viral vaccination for cats, and Dr. Murray says it protects from widespread diseases.
Rabies vaccine

For dogs:

Canine Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza (DA2PP) vaccine is one Dr. Murray says every dog should have. It protects dogs from several common viruses.

An Alternative Approach to Petcare

Many people believe their pets deserve the same treatment as other members of their family—even when it comes to medical care.

Veterinarian Dr. Marty Goldstein has an alternative approach to veterinary care and shares his views on how to prolong the lives of cats and dogs:

Yearly vaccinations are not necessary. "Vaccinate at 12 weeks of age or older with a distemper and parvo vaccine—not a combination of four, five, six, seven [vaccines] in one—[and then] never vaccinate again in the life of the dog," Dr. Goldstein says. If you want, you can have your pet tested yearly to see if any vaccines have worn off, he says.
Yearly blood samples are necessary. "Blood is the mirror of life," he says. "From that blood, we'll recommend a specific supplementation."
Use daily supplements for preventative purposes. "[Give] vitamins as they start getting older, antioxidants, a good multivitamin, minerals and fish oil," he says.
Buy pet food made with raw meat. Dr. Goldstein says cats and dogs are carnivores, but today's popular pet foods are made from byproducts of the cereal industry. The grain-heavy food is not good for the health of your animal, he says. "It plugs the system up, it overdoes the pancreas [and] it serves as a basis for allergies."
Don't feed your pet an all raw meat diet. Because cats and dogs have not been on an all raw meat diet for generations, putting them on one could be dangerous, Dr. Goldstein says. "A raw meat diet balanced with either a proper calcium supplement or with crushed bone with some vegetation is the ideal way to go," he says.
Make your pet's food at home. If you don't have access to raw meat pet food, cook meats for your animal in your home, Dr. Goldstein says. "I'm talking foods—lambs and chickens and turkeys and beef and things like that," he says.

Year-Round Pet Health

Dr. Marty Becker, a veterinarian, author and Good Morning America contributor, gives helpful tips on how to keep your pets healthy all year long.

Heat Exhaustion
Dr. Becker says pet owners can prevent their pets from getting dehydrated and succumbing to heat exhaustion in warmer months by making sure they have plenty of fresh drinking water and never leaving them in an excessively hot environment such as a car or a portable kennel.

Also, avoid walking pets during the hottest part of the day, he says, or on scorching concrete sidewalks. Not sure if it's too hot for Fido? Put the palm of your hand on the sidewalk— if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws, Dr. Becker says.

Backyard Safety
Flying projectiles from lawn mowers can seriously injure pets, Dr. Becker says. Make sure your pet is confined to the house or another area that's away from where you're mowing.
Also, keep pets away from pesticides and fertilizers, Dr. Becker says. Look into using pet-friendly, organic pest repellents wherever possible.

Proper Diet and Exercise
About 50 percent of American pets are overweight or obese, Dr. Becker says. "It's the same exact causes [as humans]— too much food in their mouths, too few miles on their feet," he says. All year long, make sure pets eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise, he says.

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Target, Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site,

this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine

A dog came out of nowhere and stopped a knife-wielding robber from accosting a mother and her young son on Monday afternoon. (Pet Pulse Illustration by Tim Mattson)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

Increased Scrutiny of Flea and Tick Control Products for Pets

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is intensifying its evaluation of spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control due to recent increases in the number of reported adverse reactions in pets treated with these products. Adverse reactions reported range from mild effects such as skin irritation to more serious effects such as seizures and, in some cases, death of the pet.

Flea and tick products can be appropriate treatments for protecting your pets and your family’s health because fleas and ticks can transmit disease. While many people use the products with no harm to their pets, EPA recommends that pet owners take precautions when using these products. People should carefully follow label directions and monitor their pets for any signs of an adverse reaction after application, particularly when using these products for the first time. Also, before use of these products on weak, aged, medicated, sick, pregnant or nursing pets, or on pets that have previously shown signs of sensitivity to pesticide products, EPA recommends that a veterinarian be consulted. Additional safety tips are available for taking care of fleas and ticks on your pet.

Pets may experience adverse reactions from flea and tick control products, including spot-on treatments, sprays, collars and shampoos. However, the majority of reports to EPA are related to flea and tick treatments with EPA-registered spot-on products. Spot-on products are generally sold in tubes or vials and are applied to one or more localized areas on the body of the pet, such as in between the shoulders or in a stripe along the back.

List of Registered Products

EPA has provided a listing of EPA-registered spot-on flea and tick products (10 pp, 63k, About PDF). Since the chart previously located on this page reflected only a portion of the numerous pet spot-on products available, EPA felt that pet owners and consumers might be led to believe that only those products listed were the focus of concern. In fact, EPA is intensifying its evaluation of all spot-on products and is providing a more comprehensive list of these products.

EPA is not initiating a product recall of these products nor is the Agency suggesting that the products not be used. EPA recognizes the importance of the products in effective flea and tick control. EPA’s objective at this stage is simply to advise consumers and pet owners to exercise caution when using the products and to monitor pet behavior following their use, as some animals have experienced adverse reactions following treatment.

Regulatory Agencies are Taking Action

EPA is evaluating all available data and information, including:

reports of adverse reactions,
product market share,
clarity of product use directions and label warnings,
product ingredients, and
pre-market safety data submitted to the Agency in support of registration of these products

This assessment may result in EPA action to require changes in the registration status of certain spot-on products. EPA will be working collaboratively with Health Canada to address this issue, as Canadian regulatory officials have identified similar concerns about the use of spot-on flea and tick products. EPA will be updating this page periodically to provide the public with the most current information on this issue.

Dealing With Pet Loss

I was visiting with a friend of mine yesterday and she told me that one of her furry friends had died. This particular dog was her friend, companion, and protector. They were very close and she will miss him for a very long time.

For many of us our pets are family members. It is difficult when they die and leave us behind. Since our life spans are usually much longer than theirs (longer than most pets-there are birds in the various parrot families that live longer than we do, turtles as well) they usually pass on before we do. As difficult as it is for us as adults it can be even more so for children.

As often happens when something is on my mind, an email with related info popped into view. The following article Children and Pet Loss by Allen and Linda Anderson came zipping into my email inbox in my Beliefnet Daily Inspiration email.

Children and Pet Loss

Pets are family members. Children relate to animals as their friends, protectors, and playmates. When the family pet dies, it is often the child’s first exposure to death and can cause him or her to feel confused and upset.

From our research on children and pet loss, as well as our experiences with our own children, we have compiled a list of the major considerations for helping youngsters deal with their grief.

Avoid Euphemisms
When telling children what happened, avoid euphemisms such as, “We had to put Buffy to sleep,” “Buffy got sick and died,” “God took Buffy to heaven,” or “Buffy has gone away.” All of these ways of describing death can be confusing to children and can cause them to fear going to sleep or getting sick, to fear or feel angry toward God, or to believe the pet will come back someday.

Linda M. Peterson writes in Surviving the Heartbreak of Choosing Death for Your Pet that a healthy, clear, factual explanation to a child might sound something like this: “When Max died, his body stopped working. He [couldn’t] breathe, eat, hear, see, go to the bathroom, or play with his friends anymore.” She suggests that a child will be encouraged to talk about feelings concerning death and loss.

Involve your children in the animal’s memorial service and rituals or in creating mementos to commemorate your pet’s life. Tell your child what has been done with the animal’s body.

Explain Death Age-Appropriately
Remember that children grieve differently from adults. Their sadness will come and go and may recur over longer periods of time. Children also deal with grief according to their level of maturation. They will be able to understand death only in ways that are appropriate for their age. Explaining death has similarities to teaching children about sex: it’s best to let the children ask questions and to answer them with only as much information as they require at the time.

Use Art and Storytelling
Often children cannot express or articulate what they are feeling with regard to grief, loss, and death. Sit with them while they draw pictures of their animal friend and tell their own stories of what it was like to live with the pet and how they feel now that the pet is gone. Discern if your child feels responsible for the animal’s death.

Children may believe that somehow they caused the death, perhaps by not taking care of or feeding the animal properly. You can gently correct these assumptions. Encourage children to play and act out what they think has happened to the animal and what they believe is going on with the animal physically and spiritually.

Don't Make Death Sound Too Happy
Explain what happens after death according to your own philosophical, cultural, religious, or spiritual beliefs without making the child think that death is such a “happy” event that it is preferable to living.

Grieve with Your Children
Don’t be afraid to grieve in front of your child. When you mourn openly, you let your child know that it’s okay to be sad, to cry, and to miss the family pet.

Get Professional Help, If Necessary
If your child is grieving excessively, withdrawing, or acting out, don’t hesitate to get professional help. A counselor who specializes in children’s grieving can do wonders to help a child sort through his or her thoughts and emotions about a pet’s death. A child therapist can also help the entire family deal with other issues that may be complicating their grief over the loss of a pet.

Don't Rush Into Adoption
Allow the grief process to take its natural course by not rushing into a new adoption. Wait a while before adopting another pet. Let your child have all the time he or she needs for mourning. If or when your child wants a new pet, explain the ways in which this new one may be different from your previous pet.

Perhaps Wallace Sife author of: The Loss of a Pet best sums up the advice for grieving children and their caregivers when he writes, “Reminisce, fondly, with the children about the pet. Use pictures, if possible. Associate positive, good events with the pet’s memory. Emphasize that as long as we remember and love that pet, he or she will always be part of us.”

More Help for Your Child
Need more information? For children, you can hardly do better than Fred Rogers’s book “When a Pet Dies.” In the introduction Rogers writes, “As you and your children look at the photos and read the text, I hope you’ll find it possible to share your real feelings about a pet’s dying. As for what happens after death, I believe that’s best discussed in light of each family’s traditions and beliefs. Those traditions and beliefs are important things to share with your children if and when they ask!"

As a Pomeranian Breeder I often receive calls from grieving people immediately after their beloved pet has died; or at times just before one is coming to death. While I certainly understand the urge to immediately gather another pet to your heart, I strongly encourage people to give themselves time to mourn the loss of their loved pet.

Understand that no two pets will ever be the same. Just as each and every human is an individual; each and every dog is an individual. Each and every horse, cat, bird, snake, critter in any form, is an individual. As painful as the loss is, give yourself time to mourn.

Please understand that death is a natural part of life. The difficult part of it is being left behind as those we love forage on ahead; as our time to pass from this life is not yet upon us.

Pomeranian Puppies at Play on a Beautiful April Day

These sweet babies were placed in small temporary puppy play pens for photos only. Most of the time they were running and playing in a huge exercise yard. It is around 100 ft long and 18 feet wide in one section. They are a pure pleasure to watch running and jumping.

Beautiful Day, beautiful young Pomeranians. This series of photos was taken on April 8th, 2008. Enjoy.

One Orange Chocolate girl and 2 Orange Chocolate boy's at play. Orange/Chocolate means that they have an orange under coat(base coat) with Chocolate shading. Like an orange sable. except chocolate. These three wonderful pups have chocolate masks at this age and dilute points. In other words their noses, lip liner, and eyeliner is a beautiful chocolate. Their eyes are a light brown or hazel, sometimes shading into amber. Absolutely beautiful.

Tuffy (light cream male), Molly (cream female) and Bitsy (black female) are playing together as well. These three are tiny ones. Tiny with huge attitudes. They think they own the world. Truthfully I think they do. Lol.

Happy Pomeranian Puppies at Play

These adorable Pomeranian Puppies were out in the play yards yesterday having a great time. These are raw photos, as in unedited. I guess you could say these are raw pomeranians too...lol. As in ungroomed. This is what the happy hairballs look like at play in their natural state.

These photos are of a brother and sister. With wonderful rich coloring. They are Orange with Chocolate Tipping. Similar to an orange sable which is Orange with a dark sable tipping (sable being a dark charcoal to a black). The chocolate tipping is an exotic color. I love it it gives them a rich blended color. It looks as if these two happy hairballs (Pomeranians) are going to keep their chocolate masks as well. Simply wonderful.

In the bottom 4 photos the wonderful little girl is to the left and her bodacious brother is to the right.

The photos were taken April 8th 2008. Puppies birthdate is December 27th, 2007. They are 15 weeks and 5 days in these photos. I do not allow any puppies to leave our Happy Hairball Home until they are an absolute minimum of 12 weeks. Their mom is Elle and their dad is Nelson.

Today I'm rambling on about dog food.

For the Health of your Pet it is very important that they have good nutrition! Do you actually know what you are feeding your precious pet?

Read the ingredients listed on your dog food bag or can. OK, you've read them. Do you know what they mean?

Most people have no idea what that ingredient list actually means. If they did they would cringe.I know how frustrating it can be trying to sort through all the jargon to see what is actually in your pet's food.

OK so here is where this is going to start sounding like an advertisement. Bear with me OK. There is some excellent information on this site whether you buy the food or not. Personally I think the food is some of the best out there. That's why I feed it to my Pomeranians and recommend it. Yes it's good for large dogs, and they have a wonderful cat food as well.

Use either link and check out the food and information available. If you like videos there is a great video you can watch (no it doesn't cost anything to watch it) . It's very informative, not overly long, and not too boring...lol...

Good nutrition is extremely important for your pet. Even more so, if you are considering breeding. I can not stress this enough!

For a healthy happy pet good nutrition is paramount! So many health issues can be avoided simply by good nutrition. Of course, good nutrition is from what you feed your pet.

When you are breeding your dog poor nutrition can (and often does) result in the deaths of both puppies and mother dog.

Of course good nutrition comes at a price. Along with the price come the benefits, healthy pets, healthy breeding dogs, healthy puppies, a longer time to enjoy your furry family member. Yes I mean the four footed furry family members. Fewer trips to the veterinary, fewer vet bills, lower medical expenses.

If you offset the dog food cost against the pain and suffereing of your pet and the veterinary bills poor nutrition causes. The cost of good nutrition is nominal.

Wow... can we say heat. It's yet another 100 plus degree day here today. Most of my hot hairballs are doing pretty well. It's pretty stressful on the elder group however. This afternoon I let the puppies out and about to play, after the worst of the heat of the day had passed. They had so much fun zipping about ... jumping in water pans ... and generally being happy little Pomeranians. I snapped quite a few pics while they were playing in their disarray... lol... They are truly happy little dogs.

Still grooming... in the middle of a hair storm... lol...

I am still grooming Poms as fast as I can. Hair flying everywhere. I started doing something I said I would never do. I started doing summer cuts on the hairballs. Makes me laugh when I look at them prancing around in their summer cuts. They look so happy it just makes me giggle. I want to get some photos of their new hairdos taken and posted. These dogs are just too funny.

Their undercoats are so heavy that they are walking around in the equivalent of a heavy down filled coat in 100 degree temps.

Happily some are blowing their coats of by themselves, so those will only need a basic brush-up, deworm and toe nail trim… I’ll probably do a bit of a hair trim too… that’s what I have been doing.

I'm throwing up some larger yards. Not the 1/2 acre to 1 acre running yards that I wanted. They will have to come later. but some larger yards that have shade trees either around them or in them. I am also separating my girls from the guys after this breeding cycle. Giving everyone a break.

There is a group of young males that is going into the vet for neuter as well. Beautiful fellows... or should I say handsome... At any rate part of them will be my stud dogs companions and part will go into pet homes. Gorgeous guys. Wow. I know that sounds like an advertisement. I suppose it could be, but in truth they are a pleasure to look at. I would love to put some into agility. That would be a blast. Maybe after I get things caught up more.

The past few years of illness has put me so far behind where I had wanted to be at this point that it's a bit frustrating. I am concentrating on working with my kennels and online projects till I have things caught up and in a much more organized state.

I am looking forward to starting on the ... guess you could call them cabins. The plan is to have temp controlled vent fans and solar heat. I imagine the designs will change a bit as I progress with them. It seems like my mind has run through hundreds of designs at this point.. it just keeps working on it while I'm doing other things. Tweaking things...

Peanut is sound asleep on his back in my shredder tub... the shredder tub is a 22 gallon Rubbermaid tub my shredded paper drops into. it's full of shreds and he is taking advantage of it. too cute.. of course my camera is in the whelping house.

For the Health of your Pet it is very important that they have good nutrition! Do you actually know what you are feeding your precious pet?

Read the ingredients listed on your dog food bag or can. OK, you've read them. Do you know what they mean?

Directions to our Happy Hairball Home... from Denver

Directions:
• I 25 north... through Cheyenne WY
• Just coming out on the north side of Cheyenne you will see Vandehi exit... then you will see Horse Creek exit... the next exit is Torrington Hwy 85 (exit #17)... take the Torrington Hwy 85 exit... (this exit is on the east side of the interstate) make sure you have enough fuel before you leave Cheyenne... there is a rest stop about 40 miles out on 85... then you will go through Hawk Springs (neither has fuel).
• Stay on Highway 85 until you see the turn off to Yoder on the west... and Huntley on the east (highway 161) turn east on 161. ( approx. 56 miles from exit 17 to the turn off to hwy 161)
• Stay on 161 until you reach the stop sign (it's the first stop sign you will come to that is for you) you will be going due east when you come to it. (approx. 7miles)
• 161 runs into hwy 92 east... you will come to a stop sign… that is where 161 goes into 92…while you are sitting at the stop sign… look east… you will see a gravel road running east up over a hill… my house is just over the hill on the eastern horizon…so go east on hwy 92... (approx. 8 tenths of a mile) (not 8 miles… 8 tenths of a mile) the sign for road 52 is a little difficult to see... however hwy 92 turns south there... keep coming east on the gravel road... be sure to look for vehicles it’s a dangerous intersection... you will cross a set of railroad tracks on the gravel road as well... those tracks are used... watch for trains...
• from hwy 92 come east on Road 52... it's a gravel road... we are the second house on the north on the gravel road it's about 1.5 miles on the gravel road... you can not see our house until you pass the missile silo (no building... just a fenced enclosure with some posts and lights on the north side of the road)...slow down after the missile silo... the gravel road is well maintained by the airforce up to it... but after that it is a county road and kind of rutty... not horrible... but rutty... Our house is yellow with green trim… there is a Quonset building, a greenhouse, and 3 other outbuildings… and of course the Poms…

How true...

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were
hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family
we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last
time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to
accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good
life - - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Accommodating Your Elderly Pets

When pets get older, there are some accommodations you may want to make for them. A pet's behavior may change as it ages. The first recommendation would be a visit to the veterinarian. Many symptoms interpreted in elderly contributed to age may actually be medical conditions.

If your pet seems less active, confused, disoriented, and disinterest in household activity, it could signal cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive dysfunction is a treatable geriatric disease.

Weight gain is a common problem with older pets. Exercise is still important for older pet health. It helps them stay toned and will help stimulate internal function. They may need shorter exercise periods at a slower pace. Try walking your pet during less extreme temperatures of the day.

Grooming is another area that becomes more difficult for older pets. As their joints get stiff, it may be harder for your pet to groom hard-to-reach areas. Their skin can also become dry or matted so it is important to brush your pet thoroughly.

As your pet ages, it may be harder for them to get around the places that they are familiar with. Some ideas to help your pet navigate are the following: If your pet likes to sleep on your bed, and is still continent, perhaps a small stair would assist them to reach the top of the bed. If they have trouble navigating the stairs due to hip problems, perhaps a ramp with cleat strips to give their paws grip may help. Also, check the outdoor run area of your pet. Holes, steep grades and gravel may make their outdoor travels difficult. Observe your pet climbing wooden deck stairs, sometimes those can be slippery for older pets. Simple sandpaper treads can be applied for grip.

Overall, think about your aging pet and their needs. Some simple changes could make their life more comfortable.

Housebreaking a Puppy

You absolutely love your new addition to your family. Cute, cuddly, and he tickles you with his wet nose! You have a brand new puppy. As the excitement wears off you may be wondering the most effective method for housebreaking your new family member. This article will examine some ways effectively to housebreak your puppy.

If you have not done so already, it is important to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for your puppy to have a complete examination. If he is in ill health in anyway this can affect the success you have at housebreaking him. It is important to take care of any illnesses that he may have before you begin housebreaking your puppy. You want your puppy's diet to be reliable with a high-quality dry puppy food. As tempting as it may be you should avoid feeding your puppy table scraps and if you prefer canned dog food remember that this type of food can loosen his stool, which will increase the difficulty of housebreaking him/her.

While you are attempting to housebreak your puppy, you will need to keep close eye on him. You may crate train him or keep him confined in a small space with newspapers, in necessary. It will only take a small amount of time for your puppy to have a house-soiling accident. Some signals to watch for when your puppy is ready to go outside is when they start sniffing the floor, walking in circles, or suddenly running out of sight. When you see this behavior, it is time to take them outdoors. You do not want to leave your puppy alone for extended periods of time. They need a balance of companionship and exercise. If you leave your puppy alone for extensive amounts of time this can be very detrimental to your puppy and can sabotage your efforts at housebreaking along with contributing to numerous other behavioral problems.

In the beginning phase of training, keep a journal of the times your puppy urinates and defecates. Note the intervals in between elimination. This will give you an idea of when to take him outside and will lessen the accidents that occur within the home. Puppies normally need to urinate shortly after they eat, drink water, play, chew, or sleep (quite frequently until they learn to control their bladder). For the majority of puppies over ten weeks old that means you should be prepared to take them outside no less than five to ten times per day. When you are taking your puppy for a walk, you should not come back in until they have either urinated or defecated outside. Yes, they will want to sniff, run, and jump - this is normal - but you are also teaching them that outside is where they urinate. Something to remember, puppies are smart, and if it happens to be cold or they simply do not want to be outside they will tinkle a little bit and want to go in. Do not give in to this (even if you are cold) remain outside until they have fully eliminated the bladder. As soon as your puppy eliminates outdoors offer him generous praise and a special treat.

Praising your puppy is an excellent behavior modification tool and works great for housebreaking (along with those treats). Choose a trigger word when you take him out such as, "potty," "business," or another word of your choosing. Say this word when you take him outdoors and while you want him to eliminate. Repeat this word when he is done and you are going inside for a treat. Delayed praise is ineffective and will not yield the results you are looking for.

You may find that your puppy prefers certain surfaces to eliminate on, such as rugs. When you notice this keep your puppy away from these areas until he has learned the appropriate place to eliminate.

First Post for this blog... the Arfing News... ok... my mind just went totally blank...lol... Tkhe hairballs...Pomeranians are enjoying the cooler weather. It's sheer pleasure to watch them jump and bound around since the temps have gone down a bit...

Making some progress on the interior of the whelping house... one piece of corrugated tin at a time... the tin should deter mice. Hopefully... yes it's true... I've declared war on mice... ugh...

Puppies are doing fine... little cuties...lol...
